A custom bed was among the personal items that Hilde and Saly Wolf brought on the last boats out of Germany while fleeing Nazi persecutions. “Wooden bed, horsehair mattress” explores the materiality and meaning of this object over seventy years later. During the weeklong exhibition I would sit on the bed and write in a journal made from the feather bed’s cover while wearing a dress made from Hilde’s wedding sheets. Writing included observations about the bed and interactions with visitor.
